Mosquito Light Traps in an Integrated Mosquito Control Program
Understand what a light trap can and cannot do, and combine it with source reduction and routine monitoring.
Use more than one tactic
Mosquito management works across the mosquito life cycle. Adult traps can support monitoring or reduce some local adult activity, but they do not remove breeding water. The most durable first step is to find and empty containers that hold water.
Weekly source-reduction check
- Empty and scrub buckets, trays, planters, toys and other water-holding containers.
- Keep gutters and drains moving freely.
- Cover stored water and waste containers.
- Inspect irrigation leaks and low points after rain.
- Review screens and doors where indoor mosquito entry is a concern.
Light-trap placement
Follow the product instructions for mounting height, weather protection, clearance and electrical safety. Place the unit where its attraction zone will not draw insects toward doors, food preparation or occupied seating. Clean the collection area and replace consumable parts on schedule, then judge performance against actual mosquito activity rather than light output alone.
