Monitoring Crawling Insects with Glue Traps: Placement and Records

Use numbered monitors and consistent records to locate activity, compare trends and guide corrective action.

6 min read / Reviewed educational content

Monitoring is a measurement tool

Sticky monitors can show where crawling insects are active and whether activity is increasing or decreasing. They should support inspection and corrective action, not become the only response to an infestation.

A repeatable monitoring layout

  • Place monitors along edges, under equipment and near suspected harbourage.
  • Avoid wet, dusty or frequently washed positions unless the product is designed for them.
  • Number each location and mark the installation or inspection date.
  • Record species, count and life stage where practical.
  • Replace full, contaminated or damaged monitors and keep spacing consistent when comparing trends.

Use the data

Higher counts near one cabinet, drain or appliance point to an inspection priority. Combine the record with sanitation, exclusion, moisture correction and targeted treatment. For cockroaches, accurate identification is especially useful because species differ in harbourage and movement.
