Mouse Trap Placement Checklist for Better Monitoring and Control

A placement and servicing checklist based on mouse travel behavior, inspection evidence and site safety.

Map activity first

Place traps where inspection shows fresh activity rather than distributing them evenly through a building. Common priority zones include wall edges, behind appliances, inside cabinets, near utility penetrations and close to droppings or gnaw marks.

Placement details that matter

  • For snap traps, position the trigger end against the wall so the trap forms a T with the wall.
  • Use enough traps to cover the active area; a small number of poorly placed traps can miss established routes.
  • Keep devices away from children, pets and areas where they may be disturbed.
  • Do not place traps where cleaning or stock movement will repeatedly shift them.
  • Number locations when monitoring a larger site so results can be recorded.

Service and review

Check traps on a regular schedule and remove captured rodents promptly using suitable protective procedures. If activity continues with no captures, re-check identification, move devices closer to confirmed routes and review food, water and entry points.
